The number of homes able to get gigabit-capable broadband is up to 24.0 million (80% of all UK homes), according to Ofcom’s Connected Nations Spring 2024 update. This is up 78%, from 23.2 million since its update in September 2023.
Openreach has hit the one million homes passed milestone for its full fibre build across the south west.
Alderbury tops its list of most connected areas in the region with more than nine out of ten homes and businesses there able to order its fibre services.
Salisbury ranks second whilst the coastal village of Downderry in Cornwall, and Lynton and Lynmouth in North Devon rank third and fourth respectively. Bristol South is fifth.
Openreach has invested £300m to date to upgrade the region’s communications infrastructure.
Truro, Totnes, Portland, Tewkesbury, Devonport, Yeovil and Trowbridge are among the dozens of locations across the South West where Openreach engineers are currently building new Full Fibre network.
Openreach’s Partnership Director for the south west, Martin Williams said: “This Full Fibre upgrade is a huge boost for the South West. We’re adopting a balanced build, bringing ultrafast speeds to the region’s biggest cities and most rural and coastal communities.”
