The journey to All-IP is well on its way. In fact, according to Ofcom data released in October 2023, just over half of all UK premises (50.56%)* now have access to Full Fibre connectivity!

However, in rural areas and market towns that were already underserved by their broadband options, only 4-in-10 can access FTTP* while the rest are still stuck using unreliable, low-bandwidth copper connections.

“Our rural areas are feeling a distinct lack of speed – not only in their connections but in the rollout of Full Fibre too. That’s why TalkTalk Wholesale Services is supporting altnets in delivering robust, high-speed FTTP infrastructure throughout the UK," said Andrew Partridge, Director of Carrier & Alt Nets, TalkTalk Wholesale Services.

We give our partners the freedom to design their networks without many of the commercial and technological restrictions found in the Channel, enabling true innovation while unlocking regional network growth through choice. Here’s how:

Ethernet or Optical?

That is the key question! Depending on an altnet's particular challenges and goals, as well as the topology of the area, a more cost-effective Ethernet (up to 10Gb) may be the right course of action. Or, if a high-speed, super-scalable network is the ultimate endgame, then Optical (up to 100Gb) would most likely be the way forward.

Our Network Design Team is always on hand to help our partners get the most value from their networks, go through the differences between GPON and 10G-PON and guide them to better understand what NTU hardware best suits their challenges and budget.

Multiple Billing Models

No matter the tech that fits best, highly competitive pricing and a range of billing models ensure our growing partners aren’t restricted by the massive CapEx costs that other large Backhaul providers use to limit their services to a select few.

Choose TalkTalk Wholesale Services for National Network Access

By tapping into our National network, regional altnets can take their solutions nationwide and increase service availability to consumer and business customers.

Plus, our core network boasts an uptime of 99.999%, alongside a range of Diverse Routing options that enable our partners to offer business-grade SLAs, opening the margin-rich B2B sector.

But don’t just take it from us – here's how our Backhaul services supported Orbital’s growth!

Part of the Orbital Internet Group, Orbital Net is one of three in-house brands. It utilises the service from TalkTalk to service customers across verticals including B2B, Commercial and Tourism, based all across the country.

“Backhaul connectivity has allowed us to unbundle exchanges that were previously either economically unviable to provide backhaul to or, required expensive backhaul upgrades. This means we can now deliver Fibre services to more of our customers at cost-effective prices, helping their businesses grow.” Brian Ross - Technical Director.

Orbital has already completed several exchanges with more in the pipeline. With the support from TalkTalk’s account management team, they have found the process easy and effective.

Orbital Net is a growing independent ISP increasing efficiencies is at the top of their technical roadmap, therefore smooth and structured processes from partners is essential. Orbital has found the service to be extremely user-friendly,  and has told us their account manager is helpful and consistent in providing detailed communications.

“Communication is key to support planning and implementation. TalkTalk uses its own engineers and we believe this is a huge factor in making this process so efficient, it makes unbundling of the exchanges a faster more seamless process.” Brian Ross – Technical Director

“This service enables us to supply our own PIA builds, and as there are no middlemen, we can terminate customers locally for optimal routing performance.

Ultimately, we are always looking to improve services, availability and performance for our customers, the backhaul connectivity service with TalkTalk contributes to this success and it's a partnership we hope to continue for years to come," said Ben Doherty – CEO.

From bearer technologies to bandwidths and resiliency, and more – TalkTalk Wholesale Services’ partners can choose between a range of options to create a Backhaul solution that best suits their specific needs. Meaning that our altnet partners are free to innovate and develop networks that truly deliver on the promises of Gigabit Britain for everyone.
