Openreach has completed work on a gigabit broadband upgrade for the island of Lindisfarne, situated just off the Northumberland coast.

Fibre broadband is now available to every home and business on the island and will improve connectivity for the more than 650,000 tourists who visit each year.

Mike Poole, Chief Engineer and member of the Openreach North of England board, said: “With visitors comes additional demand on existing infrastructure and that includes broadband.

“For businesses on the island, many of whom support the tourist industry, this new technology is vital.”

Openreach’s work is part of a wider build across Northumberland with engineers active in Alnwick, Berwick and Morpeth.

More than 31,000 homes and businesses in more than 25 Northumberland exchange areas including Alnmouth, Amble, Ashington, Bamburgh, Blyth, Otterburn and Stannington can order fibre as a result of Openreach’s commercial build and its iNorthumberland broadband partnership with Northumberland County Council.
